Paul's Story

The Brewers Arms - Merivale

The Brewers Arms in Merivale has become a regular haunt for Paul Barclay and his friends.

As someone with a visual impairment, he appreciates how easy The Brewers Arms is to get to. “It’s right on a bus route, so I can get there from work or home. There are no steps or barriers at the entrance, and a clear walkway into the bar.”

The way the bar is set-up makes it easy for Paul to orientate himself too. The wide space between the bar and the dining area makes navigation simple, and with tables close to the door he can always find a seat.

Having to rely heavily on his hearing, Paul also appreciates the relatively quiet nature of the Brewers Arms. “I like that I don’t have to contend with loud music like many bars play.

he Brewers Arms has provided a perfect place for Paul to catch-up regularly with his mates. He says it has become a favourite with his family too.  “When my daughter turned eleven recently, we let her choose where she’d like to have dinner – and The Brewers Arms was it. She likes the food and has always loved watching the ducks in the pond.”

Getting to know the staff has been a bonus for Paul. “They’re so welcoming. If it’s busy, they’ll bring my drink over to me– because there’s nothing worse than spilling your beer” says Paul.
